Sudiste refers specifically to a Confederate soldier or supporter during the American Civil War, from le Sud (the South). Its antonym is nordiste (Unionist/Northern). Outside the Civil War context, une personne du sud is the neutral term for someone from the south of any country. The word is both masculine and feminine; the form does not change.
