Usage Note
Adjoint is the standard title for a deputy in French administrative and political life: adjoint au maire (deputy mayor), directeur adjoint (assistant director). As an adjective it follows the noun: le maire adjoint. The feminine form is adjointe. Not to be confused with adjoint in mathematics, which means 'adjoint operator'.
