Usage Note

Sud-ouest is invariable in French — it does not take a plural or agree in gender beyond its fixed masculine assignment. As a compass point it is written in lower case (le sud-ouest) but is capitalised when naming a region (le Sud-Ouest), notably the Bordeaux and Gascony area of France known for its cuisine and wine.
