astronaute
astronaut
noun as-troh-NOT Rare
Origin: From Greek 'astron' (star) + 'nautes' (sailor).
Usage Note
Astronaute is a common-gender noun (un/une astronaute), so the article changes but the word itself does not. French also uses cosmonaute for Russian space travellers, following the same distinction as in English. The European Space Agency's French-speaking members are typically called astronautes de l'ESA.
Examples
"L'astronaute a passé six mois dans l'espace."
Natural Translation
The astronaut spent six months in space.
