Usage Note
souffrance denotes prolonged physical or emotional suffering, stronger than simple douleur (pain). The phrase en souffrance has a bureaucratic sense of 'pending' or 'outstanding' (e.g. a parcel awaiting delivery). The verb souffrir and the adjective souffrant share this root.
Examples
"Sa souffrance était visible sur son visage."
