sentir

to smell

verb sahn-TEER Common

Also means

to feel

Usage Note

Sentir straddles two senses English keeps apart — catching a smell and physically feeling something — while the reflexive se sentir means to feel a certain way, as in je me sens bien. A thing that sent bon smells lovely, but one that merely sent, with no compliment attached, usually stinks.

Examples

"Ça sent bon ici."
