assoiffé

thirsty

adjective ah-swah-FEH Rare

Also means

craving

Usage Note

Assoiffé (feminine assoiffée) is the past participle of assoiffer used as an adjective. Beyond its literal meaning of physically thirsty, it is commonly used figuratively — assoiffé de pouvoir (power-hungry), assoiffé de vengeance (thirsting for revenge). In standard French, simple thirst is usually expressed with avoir soif (to be thirsty) rather than using this adjective.

Examples

"Les randonneurs étaient complètement assoiffés."

Natural Translation

The hikers were completely parched.
