healthy

adjective SAHN Less Common

Origin: Latin sanus

Usage Note

Sain (masculine) / saine (feminine) means healthy in a general sense (une alimentation saine = a healthy diet). It also appears in the idiom sain et sauf (safe and sound), where the final -n in sain is nasalised and the following et does not trigger liaison. Do not confuse with saint (holy).

He leads a healthy and balanced life.
