Usage Note

Sacrifice is used in both religious contexts (un sacrifice rituel) and everyday language for any selfless giving up of something valued. The verb sacrifier (to sacrifice) takes the preposition à: sacrifier sa carrière à sa famille. Se sacrifier (to sacrifice oneself) is the reflexive form.
