Renseignement is almost always used in the plural renseignements when it means 'information' in everyday usage: demander des renseignements ('to ask for information'). In a security context, les renseignements refers to intelligence services — the French domestic intelligence agency is the DGSI (formerly the RG or renseignements généraux).
