Renouveler covers renewal of contracts, subscriptions, passports, and also repeating actions, as in renouveler ses excuses ('to reiterate one's apologies'). The reflexive se renouveler means 'to reinvent oneself' or 'to recur'. Note the spelling doubles the 'l' before a mute 'e' (je renouvelle), following the same pattern as appeler.
