rare

rare

adjective RAR Less Common

Also means

unusual, scarce

Usage Note

Rare behaves just like English 'rare' for scarcity, but for meat bien cuit (well done) and saignant (medium-rare/rare) are the culinary terms — rare alone doesn't carry that sense. Rarement is the adverb ('rarely'). The phrase c'est rare expresses that something seldom happens.

Examples

"Les jours sans nuages sont rares ici."

Natural Translation

Cloudless days are rare here.

Literal Translation

Days without clouds are rare here.
