Alternatif covers both technical alternation (courant alternatif, alternating current) and the cultural sense of 'alternative' (médecine alternative, musique alternative). The feminine form is alternative; the noun alternative means 'choice between two options'. Do not confuse with English 'alternate' (every other), which is alterné in French.
