Quatrième is the ordinal form of quatre (four). In the French school system, la quatrième is the third year of collège, roughly equivalent to year 9 (age 13-14) — a fact that surprises learners since the class name counts down to graduation. The abbreviation is 4e or 4ème. As a noun it can also refer to fourth gear (passer en quatrième).
