Usage Note

Qualifié describes both formal credentials (un médecin qualifié = a qualified doctor) and the act of labelling someone (il a été qualifié d'incompétent = 'he was described as incompetent'). In sports, être qualifié means having made it through to the next round. The noun qualification shares the same root and is used identically to English.
