accaparer

monopolise, take over

verb ah-kah-pah-REH Rare

Also means

engross, hog

Usage Note

Accaparer implies seizing so much of something — attention, resources, a market — that others are excluded. Accaparer le marché means to corner the market; accaparer l'attention means to hog the attention. The reflexive s'accaparer de quelque chose is equally common. It carries a mildly negative connotation of greediness or monopolisation.

Examples

"Il accapare toujours la parole en réunion."

He always monopolises the floor in meetings.

Literal Translation

He monopolises always the speech in meeting.
