Qualifier has two distinct uses: describing someone (qualifier quelqu'un de courageux — calling someone brave) and making the cut in a contest (se qualifier pour la finale). The reflexive se qualifier is the standard way to say a team or athlete 'qualifies'. The derived noun is qualification.
