Prêteur is the person who lends money or goods — the opposite of emprunteur (borrower). The feminine is prêteuse. The idiomatic phrase prêteur sur gages means a pawnbroker. The adjective prêteur (generous with loans) is also used informally: il n'est pas très prêteur — he doesn't like lending his things.
