Usage Note
Promesse is the noun; the verb is promettre. The phrase tenir sa promesse ('to keep one's promise') is very common. Manquer à sa promesse means 'to break a promise'. The expression les promesses n'engagent que ceux qui les écoutent is a well-known cynical saying attributed to politicians.
