Usage Note

Poisson is both the animal and the food — French does not distinguish between 'fish' (live) and 'fish' (food) as English sometimes does. Le poisson d'avril ('April fish') is the French equivalent of April Fool's Day: children try to stick a paper fish on someone's back without being noticed. The zodiac sign Pisces is les Poissons in French.
