Palpiter describes a rapid, trembling movement — most often of the heart (le coeur qui palpite) but also of wings, eyelids, or flames. The related adjective palpitant (thrilling, gripping) is used figuratively: un roman palpitant (a gripping novel). The noun palpitation (palpitation) refers to an abnormally rapid heartbeat.
