Usage Note

Noix is both the general word for a nut and specifically a walnut. To specify other nuts French adds the type: noix de cajou (cashew), noix de coco (coconut), noix de muscade (nutmeg). The word is invariable in plural — des noix — as the final 'x' is already present in the singular.
