Muslim

noun mü-zül-MAHN Rare

Origin: from Arabic 'muslim' (one who submits to God), via Ottoman Turkish

Usage Note

Musulman functions as both a noun and an adjective; the feminine is musulmane. In French style guides, it is written lowercase as an adjective of religion (la communauté musulmane) but may be capitalised as a noun referring to a person (un Musulman), though lowercase is increasingly standard. Islam is the second-largest religion in France.
