Usage Note
Absolution is primarily a theological term for the sacramental forgiveness of sins granted by a priest in Confession ('donner l'absolution'). It is also used figuratively in secular contexts for a complete clearing of blame. The verb absoudre (to absolve) is irregular and mostly literary.
