Usage Note
Miniature is used both as a noun ('a miniature') and informally as an adjective in the phrase en miniature ('in miniature, on a small scale'). In art history it refers to small illuminated manuscript paintings. The adjective miniature is invariable when used before a noun (un train miniature).
