Usage Note
Mer is often confused with mère (mother) and maire (mayor) — all three are homophones. Au bord de la mer means at the seaside. La haute mer means the open sea, and en pleine mer means out at sea.
Examples
"On va passer les vacances au bord de la mer."
Natural Translation
We are going to spend the holidays by the sea.
