Martin as a common noun designates birds of the starling family (Sturnidae), close relatives of the étourneau (starling); the best-known example is the martin triste (common myna). Learners should not confuse it with the given name Martin or with martinet (swift) and martin-pêcheur (kingfisher), which are unrelated birds.
