lac

lake

noun LAK Less Common

Origin: Latin lacus (lake, basin)

Usage Note

Lac is masculine and the final 'c' is pronounced. Large Swiss and French lakes often keep lac before the name: le lac Léman, le lac d'Annecy. Tomber à l'eau means 'to fall through' (of a plan), but lac itself has no common idiomatic extensions.

Examples

"Nous avons pêché au bord du lac toute la journée."

Natural Translation

We fished on the edge of the lake all day.
