interdire

to forbid, to ban

verb an-tehr-DEER Less Common

Usage Note

Interdire is an irregular verb conjugated like dire (except in the vous form: vous interdisez, not interdites). It means to prohibit or forbid (il est interdit de fumer — smoking is prohibited). The adjective interdit also means 'forbidden' and, in a separate sense, 'dumbfounded' (il est resté interdit — he was left speechless).

Examples

"Il est interdit de fumer ici."
