Intérêt covers both personal interest ('curiosity, enthusiasm') and financial interest ('return on investment'). The plural les intérêts most commonly refers to interest payments on a loan. The phrase avoir intérêt à means 'to be better off doing something' (tu as intérêt à partir tôt — 'you'd better leave early'), a very common informal construction.
