Usage Note

Insolence describes rude, disrespectful boldness — it is often used when speaking of a child or subordinate being impertinent. Quelle insolence! ('What cheek!') is a common exclamation. The adjective insolent(e) can also be used approvingly to describe strikingly effortless success: une beauté insolente ('breathtaking beauty').
