incorrigible

incorrigible

adjective an-koh-ree-ZHEEBL Rare

Origin: from Latin 'incorrigibilis'

Usage Note

Incorrigible describes a person or habit that cannot be corrected or reformed, and in French it is often used with affectionate irony — un incorrigible optimiste (an incorrigible optimist). The form is identical for both genders. The related verb corriger means to correct, and corrigible (its opposite) exists but is rarely used.

Examples

"Il est d'un optimisme incorrigible."

Natural Translation

His optimism is incorrigible.

Literal Translation

He is of an incorrigible optimism.
