Hotte has two quite different uses: in the kitchen it is the extractor hood above a cooker (hotte aspirante), while in traditional rural contexts it was a large wicker basket strapped to the back. The silent final -e is typical of French feminine nouns; the -ott- spelling signals the open-o vowel.
