Usage Note

Hériter takes the preposition de before the thing inherited: hériter de la maison de sa mère (to inherit one's mother's house). The noun héritier/héritière means heir/heiress. Hériter d'une situation difficile is used figuratively to mean inheriting a difficult situation.
