gugusse

clown, buffoon

noun gü-GÜSS Rare

Also means

silly person, nobody

Usage Note

Gugusse is an informal, slightly dated term for a circus clown or, more broadly, a person who acts foolishly or who is dismissed as a nonentity — ce gugusse ne sait pas de quoi il parle. It carries a mildly contemptuous tone. The word is also a familiar hypocoristic of the name Auguste, a classic French clown type.

Examples

"Ce gugusse nous fait perdre notre temps."

Natural Translation

That clown is wasting our time.

Literal Translation

That clown us makes lose our time.
