Usage Note

Gravier denotes loose small stones used for paths, driveways, or beaches. Une allée de gravier is a gravel path. The diminutive gravillons refers to fine chips used as road surface, and motorways often feature signs warning gravillons (loose chippings). Gravel beaches in Normandy are often described as des plages de galets et de gravier.
