Berge refers specifically to a steep or artificial bank along a river, often with a paved walkway — les berges de la Seine is how Parisians refer to the riverside paths. It is distinct from rive (bank/shore in a more general sense) and rivage (coastline). Les berges of Paris are a popular leisure area.
