gober

to swallow whole, to gulp

verb goh-BEH Rare

Also means

to believe naively

Usage Note

gober literally means to swallow something whole without chewing — typically an egg or oyster. Colloquially, gober quelque chose means to swallow a story hook, line and sinker: il gobe tout ce qu'on lui dit means 'he believes everything he's told'. It also appears in je ne peux pas le gober — 'I can't stand him'.

Examples

"Il gobe les huîtres une par une."

Natural Translation

He swallows the oysters one by one.
