Générateur refers to a mechanical or electrical generator, but in figurative use it can describe anything that generates or produces — un générateur de revenus ('a revenue generator'). The feminine form génératrice is used for a female agent or in geometry for a generating line. The related adjective générateur/génératrice means 'generating'.
