Usage Note
Foulard refers to a lightweight scarf, typically silk or polyester, worn around the neck or head. In French political and legal discourse, le foulard islamique (Islamic headscarf) has been a major subject since debates over secularism (laïcité) in the 1990s–2000s. Distinguish from écharpe (f), a thicker winter scarf.
