fonds

funds, capital

noun FOHN Less Common

Also means

background (visual arts)

Usage Note

Fonds is always written with a final -s (even in the singular) and must not be confused with fond (bottom, depth) or fonte (cast iron). Fonds de commerce is a business as a going concern; fonds propres means shareholders' equity. In painting, le fond (no -s) is the background, but in 'funds/capital' the -s is obligatory.

Examples

"Les fonds manquent pour ce projet."
