Usage Note

flotter applies to objects on water and to things drifting in the air — a flag flotte in the wind. Colloquially in Quebec, it can also mean 'to be at loose ends'. The noun flotteur refers to a float or bobber in fishing. Faire flotter means 'to set something floating/afloat'.
