Usage Note
Flambeau (plural flambeaux) is a ceremonial torch or candlestick, often used in processions. Figuratively, passer le flambeau means 'to pass the torch', i.e. hand responsibility on to someone else — a very common idiom. The diminutive flammèche means 'spark'.
