Faute appears in many fixed phrases: c'est ma faute (it's my fault), sans faute (without fail), and faute de (for lack of). In sports such as tennis or football, une faute is a foul or fault. Do not confuse it with défaut (defect, flaw), which implies an inherent shortcoming rather than an act.
