démon

demon, devil

noun deh-MOHN Less Common

Usage Note

Démon comes from Greek daimon via Latin. It is used literally in religious or fantasy contexts and figuratively: le démon de la jalousie (the demon of jealousy). The adjective démoniaque means 'demonic' or 'fiendish.' Do not confuse with diable, the common word for 'devil.'

Examples

"Il combat ses propres démons."

Natural Translation

He fights his own demons.
