Usage Note

douteux describes something that raises doubt about its quality, legality, or sincerity. The feminine form is douteuse. In informal registers un endroit douteux ('a shady place') or un type douteux ('a dodgy character') are common. The closely related noun is doute ('doubt') and the verb douter ('to doubt').
