déchiqueter

shred, tear to pieces

verb day-sheek-TAY Rare

Usage Note

Déchiqueter means to cut or tear something into ragged, irregular pieces — stronger and more violent than découper (to cut out neatly). It is used for paper, flesh, fabric, and metaphorically for harsh criticism. The spelling doubles the 't' before mute-e endings: il déchiquette.

Examples

"Le chien a déchiqueté le coussin."

Natural Translation

The dog shredded the cushion.
