Usage Note
Croître is a formal or literary verb; in everyday speech grandir (for living things) or augmenter (for quantities) are more common. It is irregular: il croît (note the circumflex to distinguish from croire). The 1990 reform allows croitre without the circumflex. The noun croissance (f) (growth) is widely used.
