Usage Note

Cratère refers both to a volcanic crater and to an impact crater on a planet or moon. The original Greek krater was a large vessel used to mix wine and water at banquets. In French volcanology, le cratère sommital is the summit crater of a volcano. The plural is regular: des cratères.
