Usage Note
Compas (always masculine, final 's' is silent but present in spelling) refers to the drawing instrument with two legs for making circles — not the magnetic compass, which is boussole (f). The plural is identical: des compas. The expression avoir le compas dans l'oeil means to have a keen eye for measurement.
Examples
"Il trace un cercle parfait avec son compas."
Natural Translation
He draws a perfect circle with his compass.
